Salvador Dali’s paintings are undoubtedly beautiful. He captures a dream as an image in all of his paintings and so I have come to respect him because of his ambitions as an artist. I think that Dali had one of the most beautiful minds and that he passed too soon. As many artists do, Dali understood something most people never realize; the paradox of a fleeting memory. More specifIcally this pertains to his depiction of dreams in all of his paintings; the depiction of the obvious, manifest meaning where the viewer can interpret the latent meaning. He was a great friend of Freud so it only makes sense that Dali understood the inherent connection between the past and the present. Furthermore, modernism inherently signifies a rupture between the past and present and Dali’s surrealism captures exactly this; the irony of the disconnect between the past and present. The past continually influences the present- whether it be art or literature- and so the past is always within the present, Death always gives way to life.
